Frequently Asked Questions
I'm a sole trader and already have a business name - what should I do?
Enter your business name as the company name (note: LTD will be appended to its name). You will then be asked to enter any further details to register your company.
Can I use lowercase letters in my company name?
No, officially your company name will be registered with NZBR in uppercase letters. All companies registered with NZBR will appear on the database with uppercase letters.
However, you can still trade with your lower case alternative. I.e. “MyCompany” will be registered as “MYCOMPANY LTD” but can use “MyCompany” on business cards, etc.
Is it mandatory to register with the NZBR?
The Official answer is No, you are not obligated to register with the New Zealand Business Registry, however in doing so you appear on the NZBR database as an officially trading company.
What's the difference between the name endings?
All the name ending options (e.g. LTD, LLC) are all legally identical. It is simply a matter of styling preference. Some people prefer LTD, some prefer LLC.
